American Airlines and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport have expanded their plans for the new Terminal F at the airport, the carrier and the airport announced. Plans for a sixth terminal first were introduced in May 2019, but development was paused during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The investment for the new terminal, originally $1.6 billion, has been increased to $4 billion, and will include 31 new gates for American, up from the 15 initially planned, according to the carrier.
Additional new components of the Terminal F plan include new facilities to expand American's international operations, increased lounge and premium space, a new customer check-in experience and a dedicated parking garage, according to the carrier. The airline and the airport also extended American's use and lease agreement with DFW through 2043.
In addition, the project features a 400,000-sq.-ft. concourse, a new Skylink station, a walking connection to Terminal D, and an expansion of Terminal E that will add more than 100,000 square feet of new check-in, security and baggage claim facilities dedicated to customers flying to or from Terminal F, according to DFW. The Terminal F parking garage will have "built-in curbside circulation and an innovative baggage drop and check-in area."
The Terminal F project broke ground in November 2024, and the expected completion date for the first phase is 2027.
The airport also is rebuilding and expanding Terminal C and expanding Terminal A. The former will get an additional 115,000 square feet and four new gates; the latter will get an additional 140,000 square feet and five new gates. This project cost is estimated at $3 billion and broke ground in August 2024.
Following the first phase and expansion of Terminal C, the remainder of the terminal will be demolished and rebuilt in two additional phases. The overall project is expected to be completed in 2030, according to DFW.
