Philadelphia International Airport has completed a runway expansion project that will enable the airport to accommodate newer aircraft types used on long-haul international routes. The $200 million project, which began in 2014, extended one of the airport's two main runways by 1,500 feet to 12,000 feet and also added to and improved taxiway space. Airport CEO Chellie Cameron said Philadelphia has seen "significant growth" in recent years, including American Airlines' upcoming direct service to Casablanca, Morocco, next June, and that the project would "give us more flexibility in accommodating the newer fleet of aircraft that are being flown on international routes to Asia and beyond."
