Lufthansa Group airlines are requiring passengers to wear face coverings at the airport and while onboard aircraft as of May 4.
The group said passengers should bring their own covering for the mouth and nose, preferably a reusable fabric mask, but it would also accept scarves, disposable masks and other types of coverings. Passengers will be notified of the rule via text message or email prior to their flight. The requirement will last until Aug. 31.
With a mask rule in place, Lufthansa will relax its current rule that prevents passengers from sitting next to one another in Premium and Premium Economy classes. However, the group noted it would still space passengers as widely apart as possible in the cabin.
The group also noted that onboard infections are "very unlikely," with air filtration systems in place that produce air quality similar to operating theaters. To date, there have been no confirmed cases of Covid-19 transmissions on a Lufthansa Group flight, according to the group.
