Delta Air Lines is revamping what it calls its fare classes even further than initially announced on May 15, when it said that as of Oct. 1, its Main Cabin offering would be split into three categories: Basic, Classic and Extra.
The same now applies to Delta's Comfort class—which already includes Comfort Classic and Comfort Extra options—and which offers extra legroom and other amenities beyond its Main cabin offering. Beginning Nov. 19, Delta will offer a Comfort Basic category "in very select markets" domestically, the carrier announced Nov. 6.
Bookings in the new Comfort Basic provide fewer SkyMiles loyalty program seat miles than Comfort Classic or Comfort Extra. Also, Comfort Basic seats are assigned after check-in and are likely to be a middle seat, customers cannot use miles to purchase a Comfort Basic ticket, the fare is ineligible for upgrades, neither same-day confirmed changes nor same-day standby are allowed, and the fare is nonrefundable, according to Delta. Customers can cancel for partial Delta eCredit or make changes for a fee.
Comfort Basic ticket holders will, however, still have more legroom, dedicated overhead bin space, Zone 3 boarding, and complimentary wine, beer and spirits on board, according to Delta. They also will be able to earn Medallion Qualifying Dollars for their flight and have Delta Club access with eligible membership.
With this new addition, there will be 12 seating classifications: the three each in Main and Comfort, plus Classic and Extra for Premium Select, First and One.
According to the Delta website, nonrefundable tickets now include Delta Main Basic, Comfort Basic, Main Classic, Comfort Classic, Premium Select Classic, First Classic and One Classic.
