Radisson Hotel Group has made Africa the center of its growth strategy and aims to reach 150 hotels in operation or under development by 2025, the company announced. As of today, there are nearly 100 hotels either in operation or under development, with an almost equal split between the two, according to a company spokesperson.
During 2020, Radisson signed nine hotels with 1,600 rooms in markets including Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana. Two opened during the fourth quarter: the Radisson Hotel & Convention Centre Johannesburg O.R. Tambo in October, and the Radisson Collection Hotel Bamako in Mali in December. Both were conversions.
The company is focused on key markets including Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa. "This year, we expect in excess of a dozen new African hotel signings and around 2,000 rooms, 50 percent of which will be in these core focus countries with the remainder reinforcing our presence in cluster markets or entering into new territories," said Radisson VP of development for Africa and Turkey Ramsay Rankoussi.
Radisson currently has six new hotel openings in Africa planned for 2021, with three in Madagascar; one each in Juba, South Sudan and St. Denis, Reunion Island; and a Radisson Red hotel in the Rosebank section of Johannesburg, according to Radisson area SVP for the Middle East and Africa Tim Cordon.
