American Airlines and United Airlines each temporarily are suspending service to Hong Kong due to diminished demand amid the coronavirus outbreak, the carriers announced.
United's last flight to Hong Kong from San Francisco will depart Feb. 6, and the last flight from Hong Kong will depart on Feb. 8, after which time flights are suspended until Feb. 20. The carrier already had cut its other service to Hong Kong.
American, which had maintained its service to Hong Kong from both Los Angeles and Dallas-Fort Worth, also announced Thursday that it had suspended flights to Hong Kong through Feb 20.
[Update, Feb. 6: American Airlines on Thursday extended the suspension of flights between Hong Kong and Los Angeles through March 27, citing reduced demand. It still intends to resume service between Hong Kong and Dallas-Fort Worth on Feb. 21.]
Delta Air Lines does not fly to Hong Kong.
While the suspensions are subject to change, for now they are of a shorter duration than the suspended service to mainland China announced last week. United and American have both suspended service on those routes until late March, and Delta has suspended service through the end of April.
As of Wednesday, Hong Kong has had 21 confirmed cases and one death related to the coronavirus, compared with 24,300 confirmed cases and 490 deaths in mainland China, according to the BBC.
