United Airlines will increase its checked-bag fees on tickets purchased on or after April 3 for customers traveling in the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Latin America, the carrier announced Thursday evening.
First and second checked-bag fees will increase by $10 each to $50 and $60, respectively, while a third checked-bag fee will increase by $50 to $200. Those rates are for bags that weigh up to 50 pounds.
Customers who prepay for their bags online at least 24 hours before their flight "in most markets" will receive a $5 discount, according to a United statement. That discount applies only to first and second checked bags.
In addition, United said that United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members and customers traveling in premium cabins still can check a bag for free.
The move comes the same week that JetBlue increased its fees for checked luggage and as fuel prices remain elevated following the Feb. 28 start of the U.S. and Israeli military campaign in Iran.
The last time multiple U.S. carriers increased checked-bag fees was in early 2024.
