The 13 members of the Oneworld airline alliance have pledged to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, the alliance said.
Some carriers within the alliance—including British Airways and Iberia parent company International Airlines Group, Japan Airlines and Qantas—already had made that pledge, and Finnair has the more ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2045, but Oneworld said the full membership commitment makes it "the first global alliance to unite behind a common target to achieve carbon neutrality." Other members include American Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and SriLankan Airlines.
The path to carbon neutrality will include improved efficiency, investing in lower-emission fuels and fuel-efficient aircraft, reducing waste and carbon offset programs, according to Oneworld.
