Lufthansa has canceled all flights into and out of the Frankfurt and Munich airports on Feb. 17 as the facilities will be closed because of a planned one-day strike by the German union Ver.di, according to a post on the carrier's website. The union represents airport workers, and talks over a wage dispute have failed.
Other airports around the country also will be affected by the strike, including those in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Hanover, Bremen and Dortmund.
More than 1,110 departures were scheduled from affected German airports Friday, totaling more than 190,000 seats, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. Frankfurt Airport was scheduled to see the highest number of departures at 478, followed by Munich at 366.
Lufthansa was scheduled to operate the most departures compared with other carriers at 588, followed by Eurowings at 81, according to Cirium.
It's been a challenging week for Lufthansa. On Wednesday, the carrier canceled and delayed hundreds of flights because of a damaged fiber-optic cable in Frankfurt that caused a technology outage for the carrier. The outage resulted in Lufthansa canceling 141 flights and delaying 329 according to flight tracker FlightAware. Its Cityline subsidiary canceled 40 flights—14 percent of its schedule—and delayed 121.
As of 1:45 p.m. ET today, Lufthansa had canceled 235 flights, 29 percent of its schedule, and delayed 254. Cityline had canceled 63 flights, 23 percent of its schedule, and delayed 71. For tomorrow, Lufthansa has canceled 570 flights, 73 percent of its total schedule, while Cityline has canceled 212.
