JetBlue is consolidating operations in five major U.S. markets for eight weeks beginning April 15, coinciding with its plans to cut April capacity 80 percent, the carrier announced.
In Boston, where typical daily departures for April have been reduced to 28 from 180, all service will operate from Boston Logan International Airport. Service from T.F. Green International Airport will be suspended.
JetBlue in the San Francisco area has cut daily departures from 19 to two, which will operate out of San Francisco International Airport. Service at San Jose International Airport will be suspended.
All Washington-area flights will operate from Reagan National Airport, and service at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport will be suspended. Service in the region has been reduced to five daily departures from 34 for April.
Service in both New York and Los Angeles will be consolidated to two airports in each region. In New York, where April daily flights have dropped to 30 from 215, JetBlue will operate out of John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International airports, with service suspended at LaGuardia, Westchester County and Stewart International airports. Los Angeles-area flights, down to five daily departures from 44 in April, will operate from Los Angeles International and Long Beach airports. JetBlue will be suspended service at Hollywood Burbank and Ontario International airports.
JetBlue also plans to file with the U.S. Department of Transportation to suspend flying at airports outside of those regions where it has only a few daily flights, according to the carrier. JetBlue said the consolidation is "aimed at reducing excess flying during a time of unprecedented low demand for air travel while maintaining a critical level of service across the airline's network for those who absolutely must fly."
