Delta Air Lines is partnering with aviation startup JetZero to help develop a blended-wing-body aircraft, with a design that could prove significantly more fuel-efficient than that of traditional jets, the carrier said Wednesday.
JetZero in 2023 was awarded a $235 million grant to develop the blended-wing-body passenger aircraft, with an appearance far different than current jets and the promise of more fuel-efficient operations, perhaps up to 50 percent compared with existing jets.
Delta said it would provide JetZero with guidance in maintenance and operations through its Sustainable Skies Lab, the sustainability innovation unit it launched in 2023. Delta also said it would lead development of the aircraft interior.
"The uniquely shaped airframe, that differs from today’s tube-and-wing shape, offers endless possibilities," according to Delta. "With Delta at the helm of designing the interiors, customers can expect changes that enhance their experience, including dedicated overhead bin space for each passenger, accessible seats and lavatories, and fewer rows."
Under the terms of the Air Force grant, JetZero plans to build a demonstration aircraft for a first flight in 2027. "Delta will play a crucial role in the development by providing the operational expertise to help make this technology viable," Delta said.
Alaska Airlines invested in JetZero last year.
