American Airlines and Google have signed an agreement for
sustainable aviation fuel certificates, which will "unlock" 35
million gallons of SAF over three years and result in nearly 300,000 metric
tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions reductions, the carrier announced
Tuesday.
Under the agreement, American will purchase and take
delivery of physical fuel for Chicago O'Hare International Airport through
existing infrastructure. The SAF portion will be produced from waste feedstocks
such as used cooking oil. Google will receive the environmental benefits to
offset emissions from business travel via the SAFc Registry, which enables
book-and-claim SAFc.
The deal was made possible by an Illinois government SAF tax
credit, according to American.
