Self-driving car software developer nuTonomy beat Uber to the road with the first public testing of a robo-taxi service, in Singapore. Uber has said it will start doing the same in Pittsburgh this month. NuTonomy has invited select Singapore residents to use its app to book rides in self-driving Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicles. Engineers from nuTonomy are riding along both to observe the system and to take control of the vehicle if necessary. The developer plans to use data from the testing to refine its software and launch robo-taxis on a wide scale in Singapore in 2018. It also is testing, but not using for ride-hailing, self-driving car software in Michigan and the United Kingdom.
