Southwest Airlines reported first quarter net income of $98 million,
driven by $116 million in "favorable special items," according to the carrier, which posted a $5 million net income for the same period last year. Excluding special items, Southwest's first quarter 2012 net result was an $18 million loss. The average first quarter fare grew 6 percent to $146.44, including AirTran results on a pro forma basis.
