Hotels Continue Easing Cancellation Policies

By Donna M. Airoldi / April 06, 2020 / Contact Reporter
Business Travel News on X

With the Covid-19 outbreak still growing, hotel companies continue to extend the dates for their relaxed cancellation and change policies.

Accor's global policy allows guests who booked a non-flexible rate for travel prior to May 31, 2020, to modify without fees their reservation for future travel through May 31, 2021, by contacting the hotel directly, according to a company statement. The policy differs for regions affected by government-issued travel restrictions. For hotels in Spain, for reservations canceled before April 11, 2020, guests will receive a credit voucher only for the full value of their reservation. For hotels in Italy, for reservations canceled between March 1, 2020, and prior to April 12, 2020, guests will receive a credit voucher only for the full value of their reservation. For hotels in France and French Polynesia, for reservations canceled prior to Sept. 15, 2020, guests will receive a credit voucher only for the full value of their reservation for use within 18 months. For other hotels in Europe, as well as the U.K., Middle East, Africa, Asia/Pacific, and North and Central America, for stays before May 1, 2020, guests may modify without fees their reservation for a future date up to May 31, 2021, or cancel their reservation and be refunded without penalty. All group bookings are being assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Best Western will allow guests in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean to cancel any future arrival date at any time without fees, as long as the cancellation occurs at least 24 hours before arrival and the reservation is canceled on or before June 30, 2020, according to a company spokesperson. The policy applies to all booking channels. A more restrictive cancellation policy may apply to a limited number of high-demand dates at individual hotels.

Choice Hotels guests with existing individual reservations, including those with non-cancelable, prepaid rates made directly with Choice Hotels, will be allowed to change or cancel without a charge up to 24 hours prior to arrival as long as the change or cancellation is made by June 30, 2020, and is compliant with hotel country regulations, according to a company statement. For a limited time, the company will allow guests making new individual reservations directly with Choice Hotels to change or cancel those reservations at no charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled arrival date.

Hilton Worldwide will allow guests with existing individual reservations, even those described as non-cancelable, scheduled for arrival on or before June 30, 2020, to change or cancel at no charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled arrival day, according to a company statement. Any new individual reservations, even those described as non-cancelable, that are booked before June 30, 2020, for any future arrival date can be changed or canceled at no charge, up to 24 hours before the scheduled arrival day.

Hyatt Hotels Corp. will waive change or cancellation fees for existing reservations booked April 1, 2020, or before for arrivals through June 30, 2020, at no charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled arrival, according to a company spokesperson. This includes "advance purchase rate" reservations. Reservations booked between April 2 and June 30, 2020, for any future arrival date can be changed or canceled at no charge up to 24 hours prior to the scheduled arrival. The only exceptions are reservations at Destination Residences and "special event rate" reservations booked after April 1, 2020.

InterContinental Hotels Group is waiving change and cancellation fees for existing bookings at most IHG hotels for stays before June 30, 2020, according to a company statement. For bookings in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, the fees will be waived for stays up to and including April 30, 2020. Hotels are subject to the local law in the market in which they operate. If a booking was made through an online travel agent or other third-party source, guests should contact those companies directly. Group and meetings bookings are being considered on a case-by-case basis.

Langham will provide a full refund and waive all related fees for cancellations on stays up to and including June 30, 2020, according to a company statement. Some hotels may exercise flexibility on this policy on a case-by-case basis. For bookings made through a third party, guests should contact their travel agent or online booking platform. Group bookings are being assessed on a case-by-case basis. [Updated, April 8]

Marriott International guests with existing reservations for any future arrival date, including reservations with prepaid rates that typically are more restrictive, will be able to change or cancel their reservations without a charge up to 24 hours prior to arrival, as long as the change or cancellation is made by June 30, 2020, according to a company statement. For new reservations for any future arrival date, including prepaid rates, made before June 30, 2020, the company will allow changes or cancellations at no charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled arrival date. Note that any changes to reservations will be subject to availability and any rate differences. This policy does not apply to group bookings. Guests who booked through online travel agents or other third parties are advised to contact their booking provider.

Peninsula Hotels will waive cancellation fees for all bookings at all properties through June 30, 2020, for all groups and travelers, according to a company spokesperson. Guests can choose to postpone their reservations through June to the upcoming 12 months. [Updated, April 9]

Radisson Hotels Group will allow free modification or cancellation for all existing and new reservations in all countries for stays until June 30, 2020, according to a company statement. Any change to an existing reservation will be subject to availability and any rate difference. If a deposit has been paid for an existing reservation, the company will credit the full amount for redemption on a future reservation at the same property until March 31, 2021. New reservations made through June 30, 2020, for any future arrival date can be changed or canceled at no charge up to 24 hours before the arrival date. This applies to advance purchase rates described as noncancelable. Guests who made reservations through online travel agents or other third parties are advised to contact them directly. The company also is allowing free cancellations of existing and new reservations for meetings and events until June 30, 2020, if the meeting or event cannot be rebooked to a later date. Any modifications to any existing reservation are subject to availability and any rate difference. If a deposit has been paid for an existing reservation, Radisson will credit the full amount less already incurred costs for redemption on the next reservation at the same property until March 31, 2021.

Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts will waive cancellation charges, including advance purchase reservations, regardless of booking channel, for reservations made on or before April 30, 2020, according to a company statement.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts will waive change or cancellation penalties for new or existing direct bookings through May 31, 2020, if the request is received at least 24 hours prior to arrival, according to a company statement. For new or existing direct bookings with arrivals after May 31, 2020, properties are required to accommodate non-cancelable rate reservation changes if the request is received at last 48 hours prior to the arrival and the same number of room nights or more are booked for a future stay.
