U.S. hotels in 2011 will collect record revenue from fees and surcharges,
according to research by NYU Tisch Center for Hospitality
divisional dean Bjorn Hanson. Based on hotels' public and financial information
as well as interviews with hospitality and corporate travel executives,
Hanson's report estimated that U.S. hotel fees—Internet fees, business center
fees, resort fees and group service fees, to name a few—this year will total
$1.8 billion, $100 million more than the industry collected in 2010. The growth
is resulting from a 4 percent to 5 percent increase in U.S. hotel occupancy as
well as new and higher fees added by hotels.
