The average U.S. hotel rate in May increased by 3.9 percent
year over year, and overall occupancy increased by 3.6 percent to 63.5 percent, according to STR. The largest rate increase was measured for Oahu (10.3 percent) while the largest decline occurred in Washington, D.C. (1.2 percent). Occupancy spiked most noticeably in St. Louis (up 16.5 percent to 70.6 percent) and Nashville (up 10.6 percent to 70.3 percent). According to STR, San Francisco was the only major market in the United States to have a lower May occupancy than during the prior-year period, though the decline was marginal and occupancy there remained high at 82.3 percent.
