Lodging
Fees and surcharges collected by U.S. hotels during 2012 will reach a record $1.95 billion,
according to New York University's Tisch Center for Hospitality divisional dean Bjorn Hanson. The 3.5 percent increase from 2011 reflects a mixture of higher fees, new fees and higher occupancies, Hanson said. Fees and surcharges steadily have increased almost every year since 2002, when the industry collected $550 million from them. Hanson based his research on interviews with lodging industry and corporate travel executives, industry financial data and information provided by hotels.
