Chicago's hotel tax on Jan. 1 increased to 16.4 percent
from
15.4 percent, on par with New York and Las Vegas, according to Chicago
officials, who boosted the city's share of the tax one percentage point to 4.5
percent, about $1.78 based on average room night cost. Officials expect the
hike to generate about $14 million more for city coffers to help shrink a
budget deficit. The Chicago hotel tax also includes unchanged state taxes and
portions for the agencies that own McCormick Place and the White Sox' baseball
stadium.
