2024 U.S.-Booked Air Volume: $40
million
Consolidated Global TMC: BCD
British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca in 2024 spent about $40 million
on U.S.-booked air travel, according to a BTN estimate. The company’s future air
travel expenditure may decrease, however, following policy changes that align
with the company’s climate objectives.
By 2030, the company aims to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions
from business travel by 50 percent compared to its 2019 baseline. The company
has revised its core travel guidelines to support carbon reduction efforts and implemented
an internal communications campaign to encourage travelers to choose more
sustainable options, such as rail travel over flights when feasible, and to
limit one-day trips.
In 2024, the number of one-day or short trips taken fell to 27 percent
of all short-haul travel, down from 43 percent in 2019, and rail’s share for
routes competing with air increased from 31 percent in 2019 to over 60 percent.
The company last year completed its acquisition of pharmaceutical firms
Fusion and Amolyt Pharma, and announced investments in manufacturing and
R&D facilities in Singapore and the U.S. In 2025, it also acquired
EsoBiotec and announced further investments to expand its hub in Canada and
establish a new global R&D center in Beijing.
AstraZeneca’s total revenue for 2024 rose approximately 18 percent year
over year to $54.1 billion. At the end of 2024, the company employed 94,300
people, up from 89,900 in 2023.
