The average domestic U.S. airfare increased 1.7 percent year over year to $388 during the first quarter,
the U.S. Department of
Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported on Monday. About
34 percent of fares BTS calculated were one-way. The bureau noted first-quarter
fares have changed little since they recovered from recession-era lows in 2011.
BTS measures only the fare paid at the time of purchase and does not include
ancillary fees; it also adjusts for inflation.
