Airberlin announced plans to cut "more than one million seats" during the remainder of 2011,
including suspension of unprofitable
routes. The airline cited high fuel costs and the negative impact of a German
aviation tax. For the second quarter, Airberlin recorded a 27 percent
year-over-year jump in revenue to €1.1 billion, but company's net financial
result was a €47.3 million loss, wider than the €39.7 million loss from a year
earlier. The airline also announced that CEO Joachim Hunold on Sept. 1 will
step down, to be succeeded in the interim by Airberlin board member Hartmut
Mehdorn.
