Transportation
A quarter of Southeast England-based frequent business travelers must use connecting services to their destinations
because there are no direct services from London airports, according to a survey of 1,010 respondents conducted by the U.K.'s Guild of Travel Management Companies. Among those that require connections, 65 percent transit through hubs outside the United Kingdom when traveling to other European destinations, while about one-third do so to reach cities in Latin America and East Asia. GTMC is among many organizations lobbying for more runway capacity in the London area. Its survey found that 81 percent of frequent travelers most commonly use Heathrow. A third runway at that airport is the most favored solution for increasing the area's capacity (cited by 51 percent of respondents), followed by an additional runway at London Gatwick (20 percent) and building a new airport to the east of London (17 percent).
