Berlin Brandenburg Airport, also known as Willy Brandt Airport,
originally was scheduled to open in early 2012, but German national and local government sources confirmed media reports that the facility will miss the most recently revised date of October 2013. Officials have provided neither a new opening date nor a reason for the latest delay. One report cited by BBC suggested a problem with the airport's baggage handling systems. Brandenburg is intended to replace Berlin's two cramped existing airports, Tegel and Schönefeld, which will operate until their successor is ready.
