The U.S. Department of Transportation last week tentatively awarded new São Paulo air service rights
to American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and US Airways, which will bring new or additional services to Los Angeles, Atlanta, Detroit and Charlotte. AA in November plans to launch daily Los Angeles-São Paulo service, and Delta later this year plans to launch daily Atlanta-São Paulo service. DOT also tentatively granted Delta's request to "continue its current daily Detroit-São Paulo nonstop service," now operated with frequencies leased from US Airways. US Airways, meanwhile, plans to use frequency allotments "to continue without interruption its Charlotte-São Paulo service," currently operated using leased frequencies from United Airlines. DOT indicated its final decision would follow a public comment period. A provisional 2011 agreement between the United States and Brazil to establish Open Skies won't take effect until October 2015, leaving U.S. carriers only limited access to Brazil's growing aviation marketplace in the meantime.
