The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has extended its order that limits the number of hourly movements—arrivals and departures—at Newark Liberty International Airport through Oct. 24, 2026, the agency announced Thursday. The order initially was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2025, and the FAA had been considering such an extension since August.
In addition, the agency expanded the number of movements allowed to 72 from 68, effective Oct. 26, 2025.
The initial order proposed in May and finalized in June was in response to the significant delays and cancellations at Newark beginning in late April due to the combination of the runway closure at that time, three IT outages and a reduction in available air traffic controllers.
"Now that airline schedules match the actual capacity at EWR, things will only get better as we head into the fall and winter seasons and we look forward to continuing to work with DOT and FAA on a long-term solution to manage the airport's capacity," United Airlines' Scott Kirby said in a statement. Newark is one of United's hubs.
