The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has proposed extending through Oct. 24, 2026, its limit on movements—arrivals and departures—per hour at Newark Liberty International Airport, the agency announced Friday.
FAA in May proposed an order that was issued in June to limit flight movements at the airport to 68 per hour on weekdays through Oct. 25, 2025, and 56 per hour during the weekend construction period from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31, when additional work is planned on Runway 4L-22R.
The new notice requests to limit movements at Newark to 72 per hour beginning Oct. 26 for operating times outside of the construction period.
Newark experienced significant delays and cancellations beginning in late April due to the combination of the runway closure at that time, three IT outages and a reduction in available air traffic controllers. The runway reopened ahead of schedule on June 2.
The proposal is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Aug. 12, and FAA "encourages airlines and interested parties to comment on the proposal by Aug. 15."
