Boeing has begun to reach compensation agreements with
carriers affected by the grounding of 737 Max aircraft. American Airlines,
which in
October estimated that the Max grounding cost the carrier $540 million in
2019, this week said it had reached a confidential agreement for financial
damages. Chairman and CEO Doug Parker in a statement said the
"compensation will be received over several years" and would be
included in the carrier's 2019 profit-sharing program. Similarly, Southwest
Airlines in December said it had reached a confidential agreement with Boeing,
about $125 million of it would put into profit-sharing for employees. Turkish
Airlines in recent weeks also announced it had reached an agreement with Boeing
to cover some of its losses, as did Aeromexico this week.
