Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has selected
American Airlines as the primary carrier for its future West Terminal, the
airport's first new terminal since 1990, the facility and American announced
Monday.
American currently accounts for about 40 percent of Phoenix
Sky Harbor passenger traffic, according to the airport.
Phoenix Sky Harbor also plans to invest "hundreds of
millions of dollars" in the 36-year-old Terminal 4, which currently
handles more than 75 percent of all passengers at the airport, including
American's. Planned improvements include upgrades to the concessions program,
central plant, baggage handling systems, moving walkways, plumbing and
electrical systems.
