Air India CEO Campbell Wilson will resign upon the appointment of a successor, the carrier announced Tuesday. He has led the airline since June 2022.
The airline noted that Wilson had "conveyed his intention to step down in 2026 to Air India chairman N. Chandrasekaran in 2024, and that the board has created a committee to find a successor "in the coming months."
During Wilson's tenure, Air India had agreed to purchase 250 aircraft from Boeing and 350 aircraft from Airbus.
Wilson's departure comes amid the airline's recent financial losses—about $1 billion during 2024-25, according to the BBC—and the crash of Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, on June 12, 2025. The plane crashed shortly after its departure from Ahmedabad on its way to London Gatwick airport.
It also comes about a week after Air India's rival IndiGo announced the appointment of a new CEO, current International Air Transport Association director general Willie Walsh, who is expected to take the reins of the carrier in early August.
