U.S. domestic business travel grew 0.4 percent year over year in November 2019, according to the U.S. Travel Association's Travel Trends Index. Travel to or within the U.S. grew 2.2 percent. Domestic travel grew 2.4 percent in November, thanks largely to domestic leisure, which grew 3.4 percent.
USTA projects domestic business travel in the December 2019 to May 2020 period to grow 1.2 percent year over year. USTA expects such travel to be weighed down by slowing business investment due to slow global economic growth, trade tensions, weaker energy-sector economic activity and a strong U.S. dollar. In addition, consumer spending strength is forecasted to slow in the coming months. The slower projected growth for domestic business travel would limit total domestic travel growth to 1.6 percent year over year during that period, hindered by ongoing trade conflicts, with domestic leisure travel also up 1.6 percent year over year.
November international inbound travel to the U.S. declined by 0.4 percent year over year. This segment has contracted in five of the past six months, according to USTA, which expects further contraction by 0.6 percent in the December 2019 to May 2020 period.
