The number of airline tickets Airlines Reporting Corp.
settled from January through August rose 5.3 percent year over year, while the
value of those tickets decreased 4 percent. Looking at August alone, sales
volume by dollar rose 1.8 percent year over year, while the number of tickets
jumped forward 8.4 percent. Electronic Miscellaneous Document sales, meanwhile,
have risen year over year both in August and year to date. EMDs include fees
for extras like seat upgrades and checked luggage.
ARC tracks domestic and international airline
tickets, including taxes and fees, sold by United States-based travel agencies
but not tickets sold directly from airlines. So while ARC numbers don't
encompass all tickets sold, they give an indication of travel trends.
