Amtrak on Tuesday reported a federally funded operating loss of $227 million for the 2014 fiscal year ending Sept. 30,
its lowest loss since 1973. Passenger revenue for the year increased 5.9 percent year over year to $2.5 billion, and total expenses increased 2.1 percent to $4.3 billion. Tickets and other revenue covered 93 percent of Amtrak operating costs during the fiscal year, up 4 percentage points from the prior fiscal year.
