U.S. hotels this year will collect a record $2.1 billion in fees and surcharges, up 6 percent from what they collected in 2012,
according to research by NYU's Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management divisional dean Bjorn Hanson. The increase stems from a combination of new fees, more expensive fees and a 2.25 percent increase in occupied hotel rooms, Hanson said. In particular, parking charges at suburban hotels, airport hotels and resorts have been on the rise this year, according to the report. Total collected hotel fees have increased every year since 2002 except in 2008, when they held steady in the face of the economic downturn.
