President Joe Biden on Monday signed an order reinstating the entry ban on non-U.S. citizens who have recently been to Europe and Brazil, expanding it to include South Africa as well.
Biden's order overturns an eleventh-hour order from former President Donald Trump that on Tuesday would have ended entry restrictions for travelers from Europe's Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Brazil as the new requirement requiring negative Covid-19 tests from all inbound travelers began. Noncitizens who have been to those areas within a two-week period remain barred from entering the United States.
The order also puts the same restrictions on people who have been to South Africa, which—like the United Kingdom and Brazil—is seeing rapid spread of a new variant of the Covid-19 virus.
