United Airlines will charge many customers $25 for a second checked bag

. Effective for travel from May 5, the policy will impact customers booked on nonrefundable domestic economy tickets who do not have preferred status in the carrier's frequent flyer program. United said "only about one in four customers check a second bag," but added that the new charges would generate about $100 million annually.
