Singapore Airlines launched inflight Internet and mobile data capabilities on 14 aircraft
as part of a $50 million investment to bring the functionality within two years to all of its "long-haul Airbus A380-800, A340-500 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft." Among aircraft already enabling the service, powered by OnAir, are those serving Newark and Los Angeles. "Travelers can surf the Internet, send and receive emails on smartphones and other electronic devices, and send and receive SMS text messages with GSM-compatible mobile phones," according to the carrier, which plans to charge for usage.
