Lufthansa beginning Nov. 26 will charge some economy passengers to reserve coach seat assignments when booking.
In Europe, coach seat assignments will be included with "mid-price and flexible" tickets, but passengers in the "lowest-price booking classes" will be charged €10 per assignment. "Passengers without an advance seat reservation can naturally still choose a seat free-of-charge at the check-in during the usual 23 hours prior to flight departure," according to the carrier. Additionally, Lufthansa said passengers in late November could pay to reserve coach seats "with more legroom, which are usually in the rows adjacent to the emergency exits in the aircraft cabin." Lufthansa plans to charge €20 for such seat assignments on flights within Europe and €60 on intercontinental flights. The new fees will be waived for higher-tier frequent-flyer program members. Seat reservations initially would be available through travel agencies, Lufthansa Service Center and at ticket counters, but will be bookable via the carrier's website in spring 2014.
