Iberia claims to have become the first airline to allow passengers to download and print luggage tags from its website.
Passengers attach the tags by folding the printed page into quarters and inserting them into reusable plastic envelopes, which can be obtained from any Spanish airport. The bag then is deposited at a bag-drop counter. Iberia claimed the new service will significantly shorten airport waiting times. Iberia is one of six airlines worldwide to have received an International Air Transport Association Gold Fast Travel Award for progress towards IATA's Fast Travel passenger self-service targets. Sister airline British Airways this month is commencing trials on a personalized electronic bag tag, which would eliminate the need to use paper tags. Instead, passengers would hold their smartphones next to the tag to transmit a unique barcode for each flight.
