Amtrak will boost Acela service on the Northeast
Corridor with the purchase of 28 train sets, funded by a $2.45 billion loan
from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Build America Bureau. The new
trains have 40 percent more seats than current Acela trains and will boost capacity. The larger fleet also will increase frequency of the
service between Washington, D.C., and Boston, according to the DOT. The loan,
the largest in DOT history, also will fund track upgrades between Baltimore and
New Carrollton, Md., and improvements to stations and platforms in D.C.'s Union
Station, Baltimore's Penn Station and New Carrollton, as well as New York Penn
Station's Moynihan Station expansion.
