The number of flights operated by U.S. carriers in April increased about 2.5 percent year over year to nearly 638,800, according to the latest U.S. Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report.
That figure, however, was down from the 657,350 U.S. flights operated in March.
The cancellation rate in April was 0.8 percent, lower than both the 0.9 percent rate from April 2024 and the 1.1 percent rate reported for March 2025.
Carriers with the lowest flight cancellation rates in April include Allegiant Air (0.1 percent), JetBlue (0.2 percent) and Spirit Airlines (0.4 percent). Those with the highest cancellation rates include American Airlines network (1.6 percent), Frontier Airlines (1.2 percent) and Hawaiian Airlines (0.9 percent). Networks include branded codeshare partners.
U.S. airlines in April handled more than 38.8 million bags, less than the 40 million handled a year prior. The April mishandled baggage rate was 0.43 percent, which was lower than the rate of 0.46 percent a year prior and the rate of 0.48 percent reported for March 2025.
DOT in April received more than 5,500 submissions—complaints, inquiries and opinions—which was down from both the 5,700 reported in April 2024 and the nearly 5,600 reported in March 2025.
U.S. airlines accounted for nearly 75 percent of the April submissions, followed by foreign carriers at more than 22 percent and travel agencies at 2 percent. Submissions regarding the 10 largest reporting U.S. carriers and their branded networks increased about 2 percent year over year to nearly 3,990.
