The average airfare paid in the U.S. in January declined 0.9 percent from December on a seasonally adjusted basis, the third consecutive month of decline, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Consumer Price Index. Year over year, fares in January declined farther, 2.8 percent. The index largely measures discounted economy fares, and it specifically excludes fares for business travel.
