American Airlines has begun to offer free high-speed Wi-Fi for American AAdvantage loyalty program members in a phased rollout to its narrowbody and dual-class fleets, the airline announced Tuesday. The carrier's new Boeing 787-9 and 787-8 aircraft also will have free Wi-Fi.
By the end of January, free Wi-Fi will be available across all of the carrier's narrowbody fleet and the Boeing 787-9 and 787-8 planes, according to an American spokesperson. The free Wi-Fi is powered by Viasat and Intelsat.
American's Panasonic-equipped aircraft, which includes its widebody fleet, will not have free Wi-Fi onboard and will continue to offer paid Wi-Fi options via a flight pass or subscription, according to the spokesperson, who added that the airline is "actively working to offer free Wi-Fi across 100 percent of our fleet."
American initially announced its plans for free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members in April 2025, when it noted that the Viasat and Intelsat connectivity would cover about 90 percent of its fleet.
The free Wi-Fi is sponsored by AT&T.
