Amtrak ridership declined 0.1 percent year over year to 30.8
million for the 2015 fiscal year, ending Sept. 30. The rail service provider
attributed the dip to service disruptions, foul weather and low gas prices.
Ticket sales totaled $2.2 billion, also down 0.1 percent.
Despite service disruptions, the Northeast Corridor saw a record 11.7 million
riders, up 0.5 percent year over year. Ridership on Northeast Regional service,
in particular, rose 1.5 percent to 8.2 million.
Revenue declined 1 percent to $3.2 billion, and Amtrak reported
an operating loss of $306.5 million, compared with the 2014 fiscal year's
$230.1 million loss. Ticket sales and other revenue covered 91.1 percent of
Amtrak’s operating costs.
