U.S. carriers had fewer cancellations and late arrivals in May than the year prior, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, canceling 0.5 percent of domestic flights, the third-lowest monthly rate on record and down from 0.9 percent in April of this year and 1.1 percent in May 2015. Carriers also got 83.4 percent of flights to the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time, up from 80.5 percent a year prior but down from 84.5 percent the previous month. The mishandled baggage rate for the month was 2.4 reports per 1,000 passengers, down from the May 2015 rate of 2.97 but up from the April 2016 rate of 2.31.
