Year-over-year hotel occupancy rates fell or
remained flat across the global regions during May, according to STR. Europe
occupancy decreased 0.3 percent to 73.4 percent, while the average daily rate
increased 2.1 percent to $123.78. Occupancy in Central and South America sank
8.8 percent to 51.9 percent, due in large part to a 23.1 percent Zika-related
occupancy dip in Brazil to 44 percent and the stronger U.S. dollar driving away
inbound travel to Ecuador, where occupancy fell 20.5 percent to 53.9 percent. Central
and South America ADR rose 7.7 percent to $88.86. Occupancy grew just 0.1
percent in Asia/Pacific to 67.6 percent and the same amount in the Middle East
and Africa to reach 69.1 percent. Asia/Pacific ADR decreased 1.8 percent to
$95.50, while ADR in the Middle East and Africa rose 8.8 percent to $100.16. In
North America, occupancy dipped 0.4 percent to 66.9 percent, while ADR increased
2.7 percent to $122.86.
