Virgin America reported net income of $41.6 million for the third quarter of 2014,
up 24 percent compared with the same period in 2013. Its average fare during the quarter increased 3.8 percent year over year to $217.04. Revenue per available seat mile increased 5.5 percent, as the carrier trimmed capacity 0.8 percent year over year during the quarter and increased its load factor 3 percentage points to 83.5 percent. Third-quarter cost per available seat mile increased 3.8 percent, even as fuel costs remained relatively flat, the carrier reported.
