Virgin America on Tuesday reported a net income of $37 million for the second quarter,
more than four times its net income of $8.8 million in the second quarter of 2013. The carrier's average fare increased 4.8 percent year over year to $206.81. Revenue per available seat mile increased 7.8 percent year over year in the quarter, driven by a 5 percent increase in yield and a load factor increase of 1.2 percentage points to 84.9 percent. Virgin America's capacity during the quarter was down 1.6 percent year over year.
