US Airways reported a $216 million third-quarter net profit, down from $245 million for the same period last year.
Excluding net special items, which include expenses related to its proposed merger with American Airlines, US Airways reported a $367 million pretax profit, up from $174 million for the prior-year period. Total revenues rose 9 percent year over year to reach a record $3.9 billion for the quarter. Passenger unit revenue rose nearly 5 percent year over year, "driven by a 4.4 percent increase in passenger yield," a representation of fare pricing. Mainline passenger traffic rose nearly 6 percent year over year on nearly 5 percent additional capacity.
