Southwest Airlines reported third-quarter net income of $259 million, up from $16 million for the prior-year period.
Though quarterly passenger traffic declined by nearly 1 percent year over year and capacity was up 1 percent, Southwest's average passenger fare rose 11 percent to $159.39. That helped drive passenger revenue up 6 percent year over year.
